Songs of the Week 53: March 20 – March 26

plaza#5. PLAZA – Reason

soundcloud.com/plaza_mk

Not in love with this track as much as I’m excited for a new act with this kind of sound. PLAZA’s got a real smooth electro-RnB thing going on that gives me a bit of a PARTYNEXTDOOR vibe (but without the hip hop).

motel radio#4. Motel Radio – Gimme Your Love

soundcloud.com/motelradiomusic

Country rock/folk rock isn’t really my strong suit. They’ve never been genres that I’ve found myself enjoying. However, once and a while I’ll come across a catchy jam that hits me just right. Motel Radio’s Gimme Your Love is light and easy – the kind of track that is great to play when all your friends have extremely different music tastes and you need something to please everyone.

step rockets#3. Step Rockets – West Coast

soundcloud.com/steprockets

Step Rockets make music that is pure fun. I can only imagine their shows are a blast to see. West Coast is made-for-radio pop rock, and now the second track by this group of lads to make it onto one of my weekly posts.

boehm#2. Boehm Feat. Molly Moore- Swallow My Pride

soundcloud.com/boehmofficial

I’ve loved Boehm ever since his remix of Visions by Cheat Codes. Now he teams up with Molly Moore on vocals that changes the pace a bit from the first 3 songs posted this week. Not quite a dance track, but definitely something that has a bit of dubstep feel to it.

yesyou#1. Dugong Jr. Feat. Tashka – Secrets (YesYou Remix)

soundcloud.com/yesyou-1 // soundcloud.com/dugongjr

Will fully admit that it wasn’t the strongest of weeks this one for new jams. However, YesYou’s remix of an already favourite track by Dugong Jr has saved the day. It’s unfairly catchy, has some wicked warped vocals and will definitely get you and the crew dancing up a storm. I love remixes that manage to create something so new that the original song isn’t even identifiable anymore. That’s exactly the story here. If you don’t believe me, check out the original here: soundcloud.com/movingcastle/dugong-jr-secrets-feat-tashka.

Songs of the Week 52: March 13 – March 19

lyves#5. Lyves – Darkest Hour

soundcloud.com/lyves

Do you like the ungodly volume of haunting, female-vocals driven minimalistic pop music coming out these days? If so, you’ll definitely eat up Lyves’ Darkest Hour.

ciele and mapps#4. Mapps x Ciele – Parking Lots

soundcloud.com/officialmapps // soundcloud.com/xociele

Sad songs are the best songs. Ciele teams up with Mapps on a track that reeks of angst and despair. Feels like a song that is made for a sad scene in a movie.

allan rayman#3. Allan Rayman Feat. Jessie Reyez – Verona the Hellcat

soundcloud.com/allanrayman

The newest jam from Allan Rayman is a banger that is full of pompous swagger. Love it. Super excited to catch Allan Rayman live when he’s in Vancovuer here in a few weeks. It’s been much too long since I’ve had the chance to see one of my favourite acts live.

era istrefi#2. Era Irstefi – Bonbon

www.facebook.com/strefie/

Not even ashamed to admit I originally had this pegged to be my top song of the week before a last minute release trumped it. It’s a brilliantly crafted pop track that is made for the club scene – and honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that. Plus who doesn’t want to belt out the line “bon bon, bet you wanna taste it…”??!

romes#1. ROMES – Tryna Be

soundcloud.com/romesband

AHHHHH. The warped vocals are strong with this one. Without question this is one of my favourite debut tracks this year. Super excited to see what comes next from this Toronto troop. Definitely have a tough job ahead of them crafting something better than beauty of a track.
