Songs of the Week 209: March 31 – April 6

the knocks#5. Blu DeTiger – Mad Love (The Knocks Remix)

Already a revisit of Mad Love, courtesy of The Knocks. I actually don’t even really like this cut that much EXCEPT the hook before chorus. Ugh. It’s addictive.

lpx#4. LPX – Falling To Fall

soundcloud.com/iamlpx

LPX is one of those artists who puts out quality track after quality track. I also just learned she’s half of MS MR, so that’s a fun learn (knew her voice sounded familiar from somewhere…)

gena rose bruce#3. Gena Rose Bruce – The Way You Make Love

soundcloud.com/gena-bruce

Always refreshing to hear a new artist with a style that’s different. The smokey vocals of Gena Bruce to start of the track had me hooked immediately.

harrison brome#2. Harrison Brome – No More Love Songs

soundcloud.com/harrisonbrome/no-more-love-songs-1

Don’t be misled by the title – this is a total bedroom jam.

grimes#1. Grimes – Pretty Dark (Demo)

soundcloud.com/actuallygrimes

Grimes is one of those artists that is definitely not for everyone. I didn’t get it (and frankly I still don’t really understand what’s going on), but there’s something in Pretty Dark that has taken over my soul. I actually believe that’s her intention. Mind control through music.

Songs of the Week 157: April 1 – April 7

harrison brome#5. Harrison Brome – 9 to 5

soundcloud.com/harrisonbrome

Harrison Brome is a name to keep an eye on. He’s been at it for a few years now, but he’s one of those acts that seems perpetually on the brink of breaking out big time.

golden features#4. Golden Features – Falling Out

soundcloud.com/golden-features

Can’t help but think of Daft Punk anytime I see an act wearing a mask and making any type of electronic music (altho I guess kids these days will now think of Deadmau5). Really love the chorus, and with each listen I find myself more and more into this track. Something about the stop/start in any dance track just gets me going.

altopalo#3. Altopalo – Frozen Away

soundcloud.com/altopalomusic

One of the best band names ever. I actually now routinely forget which is the band name and which is the city name. As for the track – if you like off-kilter indie rock, then you’ll definitely be into this. Gotta give it a good 1:30 as well, because that’s when the song really comes into its own.

#2. Lou Val Feat. Johnny Yukon – Fast

soundcloud.com/vavaval

Loving what I’m hearing from Lou Val, and Fast is easily the track I keep coming back to. Another guy from Toronto just killing it!

#1. AOBeats Feat. Mark Johns & Robokid – Peanut Butter

soundcloud.com/aokamura

Being unique in music is a tough job. A lot of what goes big and makes the money is basically just formulas. That’s why I get excited anytime I hear something that just sounds different. Enter AOBeats + friends and Peanut Butter. It eschews the traditional type of “verse/hook/chorus” stock formula and is just a ride of sweet beats and catchy as hell.
