Songs of the Week 48: February 14 – February 20

win & woo#5. Brandyn Burnette – Made of Dreams (Win & Woo x Kiso Remix)

soundcloud.com/winandwoo // soundcloud.com/brandynburnette // soundcloud.com/kisoarmicofficial

Another in the line of “Must listen to whilst driving” tracks, ideally somewhere along a coastline during the summer time. The bouncing chorus just demands it.

mija#4. DJ Snake Feat. Bipolar Sunshine – Middle (Mija Remix)

soundcloud.com/hi_mija // soundcloud.com/djsnake

I thought I was so done with Middle. It’s one of those songs that has such a distinct feel that if you happen to listen to it too much, it wears stale. Fast. I was also done with all the remixes. Then along came Mija, and managed to give the song new life for me.

wdl#3. WDL Feat. Mawe – Hurricane Highlife

soundcloud.com/wdlmusic

This is the second Hurricane-titled track in three weeks! Weird. Can’t quite pinpoint why this one gets me, but it does. Might be the catchy, hip hop-esque lyrics. Might be the constant feeling of building momentum. Not sure. Love it though.

suspect 44#2. Suspect 44 x Soar – Fall For You

soundcloud.com/suspect44 // soundcloud.com/soarofficial

I almost turned this one off after the first 10 seconds. As a friend described it, “it sounds like robots having sex”. But then, out of nowhere, it becomes absolutely beautiful. I went through a HUGE melodic house phase 5 or 6 years ago, and this one brings me back. Actually makes me want to get into it again, as the minute or so after the :40 second mark are just gorgeous.

tyler the creator#1. Tyler, The Creator Feat. Kali Urchis and Austin Feinstein – Perfect

soundcloud.com/tylerthecreator-official-1

Tyler is so weird. Odd thing is, I love odd music… but his I could never get into. That is, until this version of Perfect came out featuring vocals from Kali Uchis and Austin Feinstein. I wish it was a bit longer, and actually am not a huge fan of Austin’s bit… but I still can’t stop listening.

Songs of the Week 20: July 26 – August 1

HUNTAR#5. HUNTAR – SK1N

soundcloud.com/huntarmusic

I’ve always been intrigued by HUNTAR’s sound ever since I heard one of his earlier releases (Naked Noises) some time ago. There was that sense of depth and angst there that I tend to like, but SK1N is the first release from him that has completely captured my attention. Reminds me a lot of JMSN.

roy wood$

#4. Roy Wood$ – Get You Good

soundcloud.com/roywoodsofficial

Quickly moving up the charts of my favourite hip hop artists, Roy Wood$ dropped his EXIS mixtape two days ago and it’s glorious. Get You Good is far and away my standout track, featuring that rhythmic pulsing style of rapping that Roy does best.

nteibint#3. NTEIBINT Feat. Stella – The Owner

soundcloud.com/nteibint

If I was casting a movie for this song, it’d be a cafe in some European city that has the charm of the 70s or 80s, but everyone there hates each other. This is blasting in the background as everyone sits alone at their tables, sipping their coffee and pompously judging each other. No one is talking. No one is smiling.

For whatever reason this song exudes judgement, but in the catchiest way possible. I love it.

knocks#2. The Knocks Feat. Fetty Wap & POWERS – Classic

soundcloud.com/theknocks

No band does summer festival jams than The Knocks. Classic is hands down one of their best songs, and it becomes even better with a verse from the new popular kid in class Fetty Wap (seriously, he’s everywhere right now). And boy does he KILL IT. As if this song could be any catchier than it was before… It is incredibly well done. Be prepared to love this song all over again.

years & years#1. Years & Years – Ties

soundcloud.com/yearsandyears

I’m hooked and there’s no turning back now. With every listen I’m more and more into Ties by Years & Years. Good vocal play and very singable lyrics make have it stuck in my head in the best way. Communion, their newly released album which both this and Shine are from is a stellar album and a must-listen for anyone wanting some new pop rock to jam to.
